A Remnant Surprise

I’m excited to share with you today a beautiful story–A Remnant Surprise by Vanessa Roam.

A Love of Reading

It should come as no surprise to you that I love books. Although I wasn’t read to a lot as a kid, I saw my dad reading, and I heard him talk about the importance of reading. He believed strongly in the value of the written word, and that was passed on to me. One of my goals in our homeschool is to pass that love of literature on to my own children. (Neat fact: Vanessa Roam is a homeschooler as well, and wrote this book, along with her upcoming Tippy Tip while teaching her children to read!)

Neither of my boys can read independently, but they both love to be read to. We read plenty of books for school, for fun, and at bedtime. They are extra blessed to have a dad who reads to them often as well (as you can see in the photo above).

About the Book

A Remnant Surprise by Vanessa Roam is an award-winning book about the love between a great-grandmother and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Here is a quick video that describes the story and shows off some of the beautiful illustrations:

Our reactions

My boys really loved this book. They are blessed with some wonderful grandmothers, so they could easily relate to the love Gretchen has for her great-grandmother. They also love to spend time with their grandmother by helping her with projects, so they could relate to that aspect of the story, and were excited to see how the projects would turn out and what Gretchen’s mother was going to do with the collected remnants.

The main theme in the book is the idea that “the sweetest gifts can come from the most unlikely sources.” However, I thought that message was overshadowed by another–the love that was so clear in everyone’s actions. I was overwhelmed by it. Maybe it’s because I lost my grandmother back in May, or maybe it’s because I was so blessed by my Mamaw’s love before she passed away 10 years ago. But, my heart was touched and I was blessed by the love that I could feel in the great-grandmother’s actions in sewing the comforters. And in little Gretchen faithfully gathering up the remnants of cloth, and in the final gift. I could feel the love while reading this story.

I like that this book teaches about love in a way that children can relate to. To our family, it is so important to love others the way Jesus does, and though I have not read the book, it seems that this book does a good job of modeling Christlike love. Besides…I love how quilting is incorporated!

I love to hear your feedback and value your thoughts! All I ask is that we remain respectful and civil, even when we disagree. Thanks so much for reading. I appreciate you!
