Moms Night Out Movie

Back in the spring, I watched as facebook and other social media lit up with this ridiculous looking movie called “Mom’s Night Out.” I shook my head as women around me fawned over it. I was pretty sure I would hate it. I am not a fan of slapstick comedy or shows that make dads look like idiots, and this movie seemed to have plenty of both.

I appreciated that it was a positive, family-friendly movie, but didn’t think it was for me.

So, when a good friend of mine called and asked if I’d like to go see it with her and another good friend, I wasn’t excited about it. However, I decided to go because I wanted to spend that time with my friends.

I am so glad I did.

About the Movie

Just in case you haven’t seen the buzz about this movie, here’s the rundown…

All Allyson and her friends want is a peaceful, grown-up evening of dinner and conversation . . . a long-needed moms’ night out. But in order to enjoy high heels, adult conversation and food not served in a paper bag, they need their husbands to watch the kids for three hours—what could go wrong?

This abstract is partly what made me not excited to watch the movie. The little info given here somewhat implies that all the problems of the night (and you can see from the trailer below that there are MANY), are the fault of inept husbands.

However, just a little spoiler here–the movie shows plenty of ineptness, and it’s not all from the husbands. There are also plenty of good parenting moments, and they aren’t all from the wives. So, in that respect, the movie is much more balanced than I first though.

What I thought

I really enjoyed this movie and was touched by it.

Yes, there is a lot of slapstick comedy. There are highly exaggerated and ridiculous situations, and sometimes the adults look more incompetent than I would like them to.

However, in the end, the message in this movie is just beautiful. There are plenty of opportunities to laugh. We laughed so hard we cried. And, if you’re sappy like me, there were plenty of opportunities to cry as well. But it was a wonderful, feel-good, family-friendly movie.

I loved how the movie dove right into Alyson’s insecurities as a wife and mom. It was scary how much I could relate, and how accurate her character was in depicting those thoughts that so many moms deal with.

The movie also offers a nice shout-out to homeschooling, which was fun for me. Fun fact: this movie was written, produced, and directed by The Erwin Brothers, who were homeschooled! You can read more from Jon Erwin about that here.

If you are a mom, I do believe you will enjoy this movie! I couldn’t wait to get the dvd so my hubby and I could watch it together on one of our at-home date nights. It is not just for moms. This movie is enjoyable for all audiences.

You can get your copy on DVD at Amazon.

I want to win because I’ve been raving about it to Jamie so he wants to see what it’s all about. Also, our kids are big LOTR fans and want to see Sean Astin “as a grown up”. Ha!!!!!! (Aren’t hobbits supposed to be like hundreds of years old??)

    • Crystal Brothers says

Haha…hubby and I both remember watching the Goonies as kids, so we thought it was fun to see Sean Astin all grown up too :)

Thanks for the review, because I am also not a big fan of slapstick comedy & hate when dads are portrayed as completely inept, so I’m glad to hear that it isn’t how it seemed. Now I would love to win & watch it with my husband.

As a single mom of one teen in high school and one in college. I haven’t had much time to myself over the past 18 years. I would love to win this movie. I love comedy and I’m glad that it doesn’t show how inept dads are.

In an attempt to get my daughters to choose appropriate movies (without profanity, nudity, or ugly topics), my 12 year old went to see this one in the theater with her friend. She wasn’t super excited about it, but bless her heart she went. She ended up loving it! I haven’t seen it, but with her approval I would love to have this movie at home!

  12. says

I would love to win a copy because I really need to watch a funny movie. Most of the movies I’ve seen lately have made me cry. I need a movie that will have me crying happy tears instead. I would invite a friend or two over to watch it with me while my daughter visits her father for the weekend. I wanted to see this movie when it first came out, but couldn’t ever find the time. Now I have time. Thank you for the opportunity!

I would love to win a copy of “Mom’s Night Out” because it sounds like a fun, joyride and because I was not able to see it in the theater. I have a special needs child and very rarely go out for anything not related to my child or running the household.

  14. says

Oh, Crystal! I would LOVE to win this…I became a fan of the Erwin brothers when I was privileged to see their movie, “October Baby”. Did you happen to see that one? VERY moving and touching story that raised awareness about failed abortion survivors. YES, I am sappy like you…I cry so much over these things! God bless you for getting the word out and for all you do here. :)

  15. Jaimie Adams says

I have not seen the movie as I have a nursing baby that I didn’t want to bring along to the theater. I can’t wait to watch it at home even though I’ll probably be nursing my baby while I’m watching it… ;)

I would love to win! I need a mom's night out myself and can't seem to get out of my house!! It would be fun to lock myself in the bedroom and watch it, but I'm sure my 13 year old would end up watching with me. Love good movies with a good message. They are so far & few in between!

I would love to win this movie, I saw it twice in the theaters first with a bunch of moms from my church and the second time with my husband for our 13th anniversary. I am a stay at home mom of 4 boys and we will be having our 5th boy in October. I have a feeling on some of the late night feedings of the new baby I will need something like this to give me laughter and encouragement and to know we are all human but in God’s eyes we are precious gifts.

  29. Barbara Ellebracht says

I really enjoyed seeing this movie when it first came out. This movie would be a great excuse to get all of the homeschooling moms together from our new CC campus that don’t know each other very well yet and have a NIGHT OUT. Thanks for the opportunity.
