What my GPS taught me about Faith

GPS faith 2

A few months ago, my husband and I were discussing his newfound love for the GPS. We each have google maps on our mobile devices and he was loving the navigation help it brought. Just type in a an address and get step-by-step instructions.

I’m not so much a fan. I prefer a map. I like to see the big picture. And while I see the benefits that you can get directions hands-free, I want to see all the steps and know exactly where I’m going. I want to see for myself the best plan of action and go with it. I want to have some advance notice for the next turn so I’ll know which lane to be in, etc.

I am a girl who needs to have a plan.

So, I started telling this to my husband. And as I spoke the words, “I don’t like it. I want to know what’s coming next.” Or at least that’s what I was trying to say. The words died on my lips as the Holy Spirit gently nudged me and I had a light bulb moment.

And suddenly, we weren’t just talking about the GPS anymore.

I want to see the big picture. I want things to make perfect, logical sense. I want to see what’s coming next.

But God calls me to take the next step in faith. Even if I have no idea how to get there, or what may come after it.

As most of you know, I am reading through the Bible this year using my Big Picture reading plan. A part of today’s reading was in Genesis chapter 12:

Now the Lord had said to Abram:

“Get out of your country,
From your family
And from your father’s house,
To a land that I will show you.” (vs 1)

Leave your home. Leave your family. Leave everyone and every bit of security you’ve known. Abram is being called to step out in faith in a big way.

“To a land that I will show you.” He was told to pack up his family, leave his home and all he’d known and he didn’t even know where he was going.

But he did it.

“So Abram departed as the Lord had spoken to him.” (vs 4)

Complete obedience, even though he didn’t fully understand. I want to live that way. I want to go when God says go and do what He says to do. Because even if it’s scary at times, there is no other way to live. Nothing else matters. I also read from Matthew 6 today, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”

I can follow Him in faith, knowing that He will provide everything.

Yes, we are called at times to “count the cost.” So there is benefit in that. But there are other times when the Lord calls us to step out in faith, relying only upon Him and not our own planning or foresight.

He calls us to surrender our plans and trust Him instead. Forget about our own deficiencies. Forget about the reasons it won’t work, or why we don’t want to do it. He wants us to forget about all those things and move out of the way and watch Him work.

Like Abraham, I want to pick up and go when He says go…whether it be literally or figuratively.

What is the Lord calling you to today?
